Arctic Monkeys 'You're So Dark'

Arctic Monkeys - You're So DarkEver wondered what it would sound like if you were to mix Halloween vibes and an unquenchable lust together, chucking in a few cultural references for fun? Ponder no longer as Sheffield-four piece Arctic Monkeys have done it for you.

This year we've seen Britain's most sought-after band release a fifth album that went above and beyond expectations, winning over even the harshest of critics. Pandemonium now ensues at every single gig they play without fail and now is the time they can finally stake a genuine claim in being the band that defined a generation, albeit one where the landscape of music consumption was changed forever by new technology.
As always is the case, Arctic Monkeys' B-sides are just as good if not better than their actual singles; which is why it is unfathomable why the B-side to current single 'One For The Road' wasn't included on 'AM'.
'You're So Dark' makes a fine addition to their arsenal of knockout tracks. It's one that consumes listeners in a haze of delicious dark funk grooves and high-pitched vocals from the Space Choirboys (aka drummer Matt Helders and bassist Nick O'Malley).

The track is one that shares it's DNA with previous hits such as 'Do I Wanna Know?' and 'Electricity' but the sweet strains of this shimmering slow-jam will be credited to nothing more than itself.

Fever

If you're a fan of The Wytches' brand of psychedelic surf-doom, then prep your ears for a similar treat arriving in the form of Southampton-based four-piece Fever. With distorted guitars galore and impassioned vocals by the bucket load, the band also drape themselves in memorable melodies and blaze with promise.

Not much is known about Fever, although a main ambition of the group is to be "popular enough to be able to slap Harry Styles and get away with it." Enlisting the production skills of Wild Smiles' Chris Peden, Fever's debut track 'Shell Shock' is one that employs psychedelic power riffs - veering  away from accusations of being just another group of throwaway surf revivalists.
What differs and works to their credit is that there is none of that hazy, paisley business going on, no drug-induced drones either. 'Shell Shock' is blanketed by a washed out riff that loops throughout the track and leaves Fever indebted only to themselves.
If you're looking for a slice of psych that leaves the flower power mentality securely locked away; you've come to the right place. Before you know it, you'll have a Fever taking over your body and we're not talking about the virus.

Royal Blood

Royal by name and rich by the nature of their bass and drum soundscape - Brighton-based duo Royal Blood are showing newbies to the music scene how it's done, despite still being in the early stages of band life themselves. For those of you new to their sound, Royal Blood can only be described as that which would result if Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, Drenge and The White Stripes were to form a super group. They're that good.

The band caught the eye of Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders earlier in the year, when the Sheffield drummer asked for a Royal Blood T-shirt a day prior to the Monkeys' headline Glastonbury gig. This caused plenty of panic for the group whose merchandise didn't even exist until Helders submitted a request.
Thankfully, singer/bassist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher aren't ones to shy away from  a challenge and twenty four hours later the drummer was seen sporting the first set of threads that was to become their official merchandise. Kerr later remarked to NME magazine "That melted our brains." Here's the deal with Royal Blood - they're brain-melting specialists.

From the opening rumbles of 'Out Of The Black' it's clear we're onto something special. Royal Blood pile straight into a major tune blanketed by sleazy bass spins that will see listeners going berserk for their creeping, yet appealing menace. Relying on relatively little is a hard task to master, but the two-piece make full use of their limitations and send out hooky thrash rock tracks such as B-side 'Come On Over'.

Exuding sheer explosive energy, from a band that are drip-feeding fans with new material, Royal Blood have proven themselves to be ones to watch out for as they head for the big league and burst out of speakers near you soon. Violently thrilling to their core, we're excited to see where their sound takes them if this glimpse of anticipation is anything to go by.

Bombay Bicycle Club 'Carry Me'

London indie four-piece Bombay Bicycle Club have dropped a storming first taste from their forthcoming fourth album, due for release on February 3rd 2014. With a tangible absence from the music scene since 2011's 'A Different Kind of Fix' the band led by Jack Steadman have crafted a percussive, layered number that enlists the backing vocals of Lucy Rose.
Having premiered on BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe's evening show early last week, the intricate instrumentation of 'Carry Me' slots together smoothly, combining sounds of the past with those of the future. The group have pumped their abilities to full power and thrown in a majestic groove that continues throughout the duration of the sub-five minute track.
Summer may be over, but Bombay Bicycle Club aren't letting us forget the sizzling season in a rush. Their latest effort illuminates hazy memories; you'll almost be able to feel the rays bite at your skin before reality returns in full-force.

The Rebel Light 'Jukebox Dream'

If you like your music with throwback vibes; Southern-Californian trio The Rebel Light are your go-to guys. Basking in all its DIY glory, their new track 'Jukebox Dream' is driven by retro-tinged guitar lines that flow into smooth instrumentation, accompanied by a crisp vocal.
Carving out a personality of their own, the trio sweep listeners into a dreamy, hazy state where the 60s never ended and overdosing on flower power riffs is considered standard practise. Lyrics like "I fell for you, I got a love that's come true" are textbook but nothing can be deducted from the feel-good factor at work here. Looking to recapture a part of that 60s spirit? Give a listen to this Lennonesque group and prepare to fall slowly and then all at once for their light-hearted thrills.

WATCH: Queens of the Stone Age 'The Vampyre of Time and Memory'

WATCH the teaser trailer for Californian desert rockers Queens of the Stone Age's forthcoming video 'The Vampyre of Time and Memory'. Enlisting the directorial talents of Kii Arens and Jason Trucco, the band have created an 'interactive' video that will be unveiled to fans on October 30th.

Made in conjunction with The Creators Project, the minute long trailer features frontman Josh Homme surrounded by a questionable amount of taxidermy. The musician also holds a cane and turns to stare piercingly into the camera - what's not love?

It was recently announced that Queens of the Stone Age will embark on a co-headline tour of Australia in 2014 with Nine Inch Nails. The headliners for each night of the tour will be decided by a coin toss to keep it equal.

An announcement on Nine Inch Nails' Tumblr page read: "The first headline band on stage will be decided each night by the toss of a coin. The eight date run is set to begin at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on 6 March, 2014 and continue on visiting Newcastle, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland and Christchurch."

WATCH: Arctic Monkeys 'One For The Road'

WATCH the newly-released video for Sheffield four-piece Arctic Monkeys' latest single 'One For The Road'. Filmed in West Illinois, the video sees guitarist Jamie Cook take to a tractor in full-on farmer chic mode. If you're more of a Jamie girl the nonsensical visuals will go down a treat, but the rest of us will be left wondering why there are tractors involved; even Alex Turner looks confused.

Arctic Monkeys are currently touring across the UK and are set to play:

Earls Court, London (25/26 Oct)
Echo Arena, Liverpool (28 Oct)
Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff (29 Oct)
LG Arena, Birmingham (31 Oct)
Hydro, Glasgow (01 Nov)

Jake Bugg 'Slumville Sunrise'

Nottingham-born teenage rocker Jake Bugg has unveiled his latest Rick Rubin produced track 'Slumville Sunrise'. Taken from the singer's forthcoming second album 'Shangri La', Bugg's latest offering picks up where first taster 'What Doesn't Kill You' left off.

Packed with razor-sharp riffs and phenomenal guitar solos, Jake Bugg appears to have found his sound - a curious hint as to what Arctic Monkeys would sound like if they upped the 60s vibes and invited The Strypes to collaborate on a track or two. The latter half of the tune, seems like it would feel more at home in the peak of Britpop, although Bugg has whipped up yet another dose of straight up rock'n'roll for the masses to devour.

Haim 'Edge'

After dropping their debut record 'Days Are Gone' a few weeks back, that went on to take the number one spot in the UK album charts, the Haim sisters (hailing from California) are back with a fresh cut, co-written with Twin Shadow (George Lewis Jr).

'Edge' holds the same fresh-faced appeal to that of album track 'Forever', whilst middle sister Danielle's vocals delivers to an impressively high-standard on vocal duties. Elder sibling Este, known for her infamous 'Bassface' incorporates bass chords that underline the sound and serve as a driving beat.

Haim consistently craft tracks with glossy backdrops and 90s R&B harmonies, with 'Edge' being no exception. Although, this tune stays firmly away from the edge, cowering in the middle of a sound we've become comfortably familiar with. Let's hope they amp up the rock'n'roll on the next offering.

Thom Morecroft 'You're Wrong About Me'

Liverpool based singer/songwriter Thom Morecroft (originally from Shropshire) is back with new single 'You're Wrong About Me' featuring fully developed clean playing and a corrosively beautiful nature. The sub-four minute track is a dreamy wonder from start to finish, although it's the dusty yet accessibly hooky chorus that sparks attention.

Morecroft sticks to his trademark winning formula of folkpop acoustic numbers and it's at this point where subtlety replaced bravado, in a manner that grabs you by the scruff of your collar and demands you listen to these delicate sounds. Any new offering from Thom Morecroft is bound to be special, but 'You're Wrong About Me' is sharp, emotive and accomplished; it shows exactly what he's capable of. Let's hope this track sees him move on to bigger and better things soon.

The Illustrations '18th Century Romantic Poets'

Swindon duo, The Illustrations stand apart from their fellow musicians, blending a mix of nu-psych rock with breathy, pillow-talk vocals. Their track '18th Century Romantic Poets' opens with a psychedelic corkscrew riff that sets the pace for what's to follow in the next four and a bit minutes.

Sounding slightly like The Beatles 'Get Back' in places, the sheer force of their sound cannot and shouldn't be undermined. Whilst, they may be fairly unknown in the industry, the instrumentation is strung together professionally with additional polish that sees them destined for bigger things. Still not convinced? What really works here is that they're not trying to outshine each other, they harmonise in every possible sense of the word, resulting in an end product that's slick and waiting to be unwrapped. Give them a listen - it'll be the best decision you'll make all day.

Jake Bugg 'What Doesn't Kill You'

Nottingham-born singer/songwriter Jake Bugg is back doing what he does best on the new single taken from his forthcoming second studio album 'Shangri La' due for release on 18 September.

After working with legendary producer, Rick Rubin, Bugg unleashed the new track on Tuesday (24) which was received to rave reviews on social media sites. The sub-three minute tune has been described by some as like "Arctic Monkeys on helium" although the rockier direction Bugg has moved into is a bold step for the 19 year old.

Whilst some might require a few listens to fully appreciate this latest offering, you'll definitely be slipping on your leather jacket and vibing hard after leaving some time for the punchy, fast-paced riffs to sink in and circle your mind for the remainder of the day.

Jake Bugg's debut self-titled album is nominated for the Mercury Prize 2013. You can catch him on his upcoming UK tour throughout October and November.

MGMT 'Cool Song No. 2'

With the release of their self-titled album, American psych-rock quintet MGMT have also released new track 'Cool Song No. 2'. As a band best known for their scattered hits through the years, the follow-up to previous material could have gone either way, fortunately their third release is saved by a sprinkling of weird and wacky in the form of this particular track.

An initial listen, will leave you questioning who created this shadowy psych swirl; it's almost unrecognisable from any direction the group have ventured into before. As we delve deeper into their curious new sound, we discover that what works foremost is that their psychedelic, soulful slow jam casts a haze over listeners in a fashion that has not been done before - not from MGMT anyway. Whilst this is no lyrical masterpiece, the band have definitely unleashed a tune on unsuspecting ears that will continue to flourish due to its entrancing oddness.

Arcade Fire 'Reflektor'

After a perpetual stream of campaigning in previous weeks, Canadian indie rock group Arcade Fire's new track Reflektor leaked a day prior to the band's planned unveiling in New York City. With a fourth album (of the same name) scheduled for release in late October, the hype machine has gone into overdrive and is about to combust, but is the new track (thought to be the lead single from their forthcoming release) any good?

With David Bowie providing backing vocals, the sub-eight minute track is certainly not one to disappoint. The oddly infectious disco beat is a swift U-turn away from previous material, one that you wouldn't necessarily have them pinned down for, but yet sees them take their sound in the direction of the big time.  An audibly pleasing potential hit that will hook you on their sounds; if you weren't a fan of Arcade Fire before - you will be now.

LISTEN: Parquet Courts 'You've Got Me Wonderin' Now'

Parquet Courts Announce New EP, Share American punk rockers, Parquet Courts, who aren't particularly fond of any form of attention are back with a brand new offering. Taken from their forthcoming EP Tally All The Things That You Broke, You've Got Me Wonderin' Now contains some rather questionable features, hooks galore and the snarling energy we're often exposed to with this group is present - but only in a half-hearted attempt.

It's still worth a download, but would we attend their one-off show at London's Old Blue Last on Monday? (August 19) probably, but only because it's free entry. Let's hope this upcoming EP is brimming with some stronger tracks and super-sized anthems.

6/10

Arctic Monkeys '2013'

Arctic Monkeys are back with the B-side to current single Do I Wanna Know? A social commentary of sorts on the digital age and the way technology has taken over. It's shorter than what we're used to from the Sheffield four-piece, but a track containing as many unrelenting sleazy sizzles as these, does more than enough to ensure the band's fifth album AM will be on every music fan's mind.

With a Josh Homme collaboration under their belts on the upcoming release, Homme gave us a taste of what to expect, come September, describing the record as a "sexy" affair. Ever since 2009's Humbug, many fans have been divided by the music, but with this injection of sound Arctic Monkeys have done things a little differently, appeasing fans who prefer debut LP Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, and appeasing themselves in the process.

Crafting lyrics such as "You can press pause and rewind" is a clever move for a band like this, who are in touch with their fans and their music consuming habits; they know their music will be put on an endless loop until the end of time, but to their credit they remain modest. Drummer Matt Helders, threads an integral heartbeat through the track, whilst time spent in Joshua Tree has clearly paid off for the band, heard by whirring guitars - much in the same vein as Queens of the Stone Age.

The bigger issue here is that Frontman Alex Turner is such a genius, he's sussed out his generation years before people of his age are expected to. The band are creating such an expansive, ambitious and winning sound these days, everyone is quivering in their boots. Time and time again Arctic Monkeys prove they've got 'it', and they're leaving no room for other bands to achieve their unreachable standards. With a heated mania surrounding them, one thing is clear; being music's finest is a role the band are suited to, to their core.

Daft Punk 'Get Lucky'

With the striking falsetto of Pharrell Williams and recognisable guitar riff from Nile Rodgers, electronic duo Daft Punk's latest offering is a chilled delight with tumbling grooves and resurgence of the 70s seeping from its core. It's hardly a transitional record, yet the french duo have constructed a devilishly catchy tune, especially with lyrics such as "We're up all night to get lucky".

In the same vein as previous efforts, Get Lucky has disco funk vibes glinting through and the track's crisp production enables them to take it to the next level. This may be the first song Daft Punk have released in eight years, but this breezy jam will certainly see fans aching for more. All will be revealed with the release of their next record Random Access Memories on 21st May.
