Interview: Thomas McConnell

Last week Lauren over at The Music Manual (follow her blog guys she's awesome) posted about the extraordinary young talent of Thomas McConnell. I did a bit of research, listened to his music and discovered that I really liked his sound. I got in contact with the man himself and he agreed to do an interview for me. Here is what he had to say.

Rock Revolver (RR) - You're from Liverpool originally, do you think the city's legacy has inspired you in any way?
Thomas McConnell (TM) - Yes definitely, there's a popular four-piece from Liverpool that have done some major damage to my record collection...

RR - Are there any emerging artists that you think will do well in the future?
TM - There's loads in town at the moment, yeah - The D-Tales, The Ragamuffins, Jay Rehm, Thom Morecroft and much more. There's a guy in Newcastle called Alex Butler who's great too.

RR - I have heard that The Beatles inspire you, who is your favourite member and why?
TM - Yes, they have inspired every part of me in every part of my life. Paul is my favourite because he is the one who has always meant the most to me, and I love everything he's ever done.

RR - If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would you pick and why?
TM - I'd love to meet John Lennon and George Harrison for obvious reasons. Eric Morecambe and Laurel and Hardy as well because they are heroes to me but in a different way. For living people I would pick Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Liam & Noel Gallagher, Bruce Springsteen and there are hundreds more I could say - anyone who has influenced me really.

RR - If you were given the opportunity to headline a festival of your choice, which one would you choose and why?
TM - Well, headlining Glastonbury would be amazing because of the scale of it. If you have headlined there then you're doing something right...

RR - What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
TM - For years I just played instruments and didn't sing, but I got told by a number of people/signs in the sky to start and it's worked for me so far...

RR - If you could attend any gig in the history of music, which would you pick and why?
TM - The Beatles' rooftop concert because of how out of the blue it must have seemed to the people walking past, it would be incredible to say that you had been there.

RR - Is there anyone that you would like to tour or collaborate with?
TM - I suppose the same people that I said I would like to meet would be very cool to tour/collaborate with.

RR - Have you always wanted to be a musician?
TM - Yeah I don't really remember wanting to be anything else, or even assuming that I would be anything else.

RR - How did it feel to receive airplay on Radio 6?
TM - Really, really cool, it was about two in the morning and I wasn't even sure if it was definitely going to be on. I waited up all night, it came on and you get a real buzz thinking that someone else just pressed play on your tune, and that anyone in the country could hear it.

I would like to thank Thomas for his time and I wish him the best for the future.
