Thomas McConnell 'Worried About Thomas McConnell'

Standing head and shoulders above the rest, Liverpool based singer/songwriter Thomas McConnell has crafted a frighteningly good debut to fall into with his brand new EP Worried About Thomas McConnell. With a sixties-style heart that beats away at an unrelenting pace, this release spawns potential hits like they're going out of fashion.  It's also floated to the surface of our attention that some of the tunes featured, have undergone a transformation since we last heard them. Now with twangly guitars, McConnell is sounding slick and accomplished.

The bluesy-rock sounds of Blame It On Rebecca introduce us to a chirpy opener that recalls elements of Elvis Presley's Blue Suede Shoes. It's a tune that drips into your brain and is wildly infectious. So far, so good. Penelope Definitely is one of McConnell's perhaps best-known tracks, although from the opening chords it's slightly unrecognisable - it could be mistaken for the start of The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, nonetheless it sees McConnell carve out a personality of his own (even if his vocals do sound like the woozy lovechild of Lennon and Gallagher).

Punctuated by the slower tones of John, loose vocals swirl and we start to feel a bit dreamy and detached, but it's nowhere near as good as previous material we've heard. Some might argue that it's the simplicity that lends itself to the track that makes it work, although the rest of us would comment that it's this factor that kills it. Finally, we're left with Just A Little Bit, Jill and McConnell's omnipresent trend for including names in track titles continues. Undoubtedly, this is the stand-out moment by far. Epitomising his retro charm, if John Lennon was still around today, this is what he might sound like. Thomas McConnell has the tunes but does he have what it takes to crack the mainstream? Let's hope so.

Thomas McConnell 'John'

Existing in the same vein as previous efforts, Liverpool based singer/songwriter Thomas McConnell has released his new single John from the forthcoming EP Worried About Thomas McConnell. This tender, slow beauty is not a step up from anything we've heard by McConnell before, although the vocals blow in loose swirls around the track creating a dreamy and detached effect on listeners.

The video is remarkably similar to that of Arctic Monkeys' Cornerstone. It's a clever concept, and the simplicity allows an emphasis to be placed on the music - there's no frills attached. The question that gets stuck in your head whilst listening is: Who's John? Is it John Lennon, the Beatles icon that is thought to  have influenced many of McConnell's tunes? Or, perhaps the John in question is mythical, serving only for the sole purpose of the track. Whoever he is, the track is another reminder that Thomas McConnell certainly deserves more recognition than he receives.

Thomas McConnell 'On My All Alone'

Returning with yet another atmospheric tune, Thomas McConnell has released a new song called On My All Alone. The pairing of tranquilising vocals and an epically delicious melody produces spine tingling moments throughout the track. Twenty year old, Liverpool based musician McConnell has managed to pull off a rich and layered track overflowing with jangly twangs and an all-conquering mentality.

As ever the comparisons to John Lennon are not far off - McConnell's tracks always contain that vibe. With polished and devilishly infectious stompers like these, it won't be long before Thomas McConnell is the next big thing. The only question left to ask is when will the album be released?

Thomas McConnell 'Miss Maggie T'

Following the news of Margaret Thatcher's passing, Liverpool based singer/songwriter Thomas McConnell has released his version of events with latest track Miss Maggie T. An extraordinary tune, McConnell first wrote this at sixteen, but it is only now at twenty he felt it was time to share it with the world.

As always, Beatles vibes surround McConnell's work in abundance and the hooks are deliriously catchy. It's a song which doesn't pretend to be anything other than it is - a psychedelic wash or rawness, honesty and lulling vocals. Miss Maggie T is a tranquilising masterpiece that will subdue any sadness of the former Prime Minister's death.

McConnell's releases are always authentically thrilling and polished. Keep an eye out for him as it won't be long before Thomas McConnell is the name on everyone's lips.

Weekly Playlist

I've been so busy this week, but thankfully I've had plenty of music to get me through it all. Comment below and let me know what you think.

The Back Seat Of My Car - Thomas McConnell
I've mentioned Thomas McConnell quite a lot on here last year, but if you've listened to his music you'll see why, and now he's back with a cover version of a Paul McCartney classic. This is available to download for free via his website right now.
For fans of: Paul McCartney, The Strypes, The Turtles, The Beach Boys and David Bowie.

Smile Away - Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney
Yeah you can probably guess the last week has been a bit of a Sir Macca fest, but what's not to love? This track comes from the iconic RAM album. Monkberry Moon Delight is also one of my favourite tracks on this record, but I love everything about this album; it's genius. If you haven't heard it, then what are you waiting for?
For fans of: The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, John Lennon and The Hollies.

Huey Lewis & The News - The Power Of Love
This song is from my favourite movie ever, that's Back to the Future in case you were unaware. Whenever I listen to this it empowers me in so many ways. It really is the ultimate feel good track.
For fans of: Duran Duran, Blondie, The Police, Pet Shop Boys and Simple Minds.

David Bowie - Oh! You Pretty Things
I find this to be the perfect song to relax to after a hard day. Bowie's vocals are soothing in general and nothing relaxes me more than this particular track. Give it a listen.
For fans of: Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who and The Clash.

The Jam - Going Underground
Who doesn't love The Jam? They are just one of the greatest bands ever and this song does it for me. It's another feel good tune which will get you dancing. Give it a listen if you haven't already.
For fans of: Paul Weller, The Specials, Buzzcocks, The Kinks and The Stone Roses.

Weekly Playlist

This week I have been discovering a love for 70's music so you can expect to find plenty of that, along with the usual new bands I've been listening to. Enjoy!

The Family Rain - Trust Me...I'm A Genius
I spotted this band in NME and from the review gave them a listen instantly. They were much better than I expected. Definitely give them a listen and watch out for them in the future, as I predict this band will be massive next year.
For fans of: The White Stripes, AC/DC, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Black Keys.

Iggy Pop - The Passenger
I'm a newbie when it comes to Iggy Pop, after reading about his adventures with ex-NME journalist Nick Kent I had to give him a listen. I loved him straight away. I didn't really expect to like him as much as I did, but it's safe to say I am now hooked on Iggy.
For fans of: David Bowie, The Animals, The Who, Lou Reed and The Kinks.

The Libertines - The Ha Ha Wall
I put my ipod on shuffle last week and this song came on. I had not listened to The Libertines for far too long and thankfully my love for them has been reignited. You may have heard this before but give it another listen. You won't regret it.
For fans of: Babyshambles, Razorlight, The Jam, The Cribs and The Vines.

Pink Floyd - Shine On Your Crazy Diamond
I had never really listened to this band before, although people kept suggesting I should so I gave them a listen. This is one of the songs I liked the best.
For fans of: Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix.

Thomas McConnell - Stop In The Shade
I interviewed this guy a while ago and I am still hooked on his EP. Title track Stop In The Shade is my favourite by far and will ensure that he goes far in the industry.
For fans of: Miles Kane, Eugene McGuinness, The Beatles, The Last Shadow Puppets and Alex Turner.

Have you listened to any of these artists/songs before? Who is your favourite and why? What should I listen to next? Comment below.

Interview: Thomas McConnell

Last week Lauren over at The Music Manual (follow her blog guys she's awesome) posted about the extraordinary young talent of Thomas McConnell. I did a bit of research, listened to his music and discovered that I really liked his sound. I got in contact with the man himself and he agreed to do an interview for me. Here is what he had to say.

Rock Revolver (RR) - You're from Liverpool originally, do you think the city's legacy has inspired you in any way?
Thomas McConnell (TM) - Yes definitely, there's a popular four-piece from Liverpool that have done some major damage to my record collection...

RR - Are there any emerging artists that you think will do well in the future?
TM - There's loads in town at the moment, yeah - The D-Tales, The Ragamuffins, Jay Rehm, Thom Morecroft and much more. There's a guy in Newcastle called Alex Butler who's great too.

RR - I have heard that The Beatles inspire you, who is your favourite member and why?
TM - Yes, they have inspired every part of me in every part of my life. Paul is my favourite because he is the one who has always meant the most to me, and I love everything he's ever done.

RR - If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would you pick and why?
TM - I'd love to meet John Lennon and George Harrison for obvious reasons. Eric Morecambe and Laurel and Hardy as well because they are heroes to me but in a different way. For living people I would pick Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Liam & Noel Gallagher, Bruce Springsteen and there are hundreds more I could say - anyone who has influenced me really.

RR - If you were given the opportunity to headline a festival of your choice, which one would you choose and why?
TM - Well, headlining Glastonbury would be amazing because of the scale of it. If you have headlined there then you're doing something right...

RR - What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
TM - For years I just played instruments and didn't sing, but I got told by a number of people/signs in the sky to start and it's worked for me so far...

RR - If you could attend any gig in the history of music, which would you pick and why?
TM - The Beatles' rooftop concert because of how out of the blue it must have seemed to the people walking past, it would be incredible to say that you had been there.

RR - Is there anyone that you would like to tour or collaborate with?
TM - I suppose the same people that I said I would like to meet would be very cool to tour/collaborate with.

RR - Have you always wanted to be a musician?
TM - Yeah I don't really remember wanting to be anything else, or even assuming that I would be anything else.

RR - How did it feel to receive airplay on Radio 6?
TM - Really, really cool, it was about two in the morning and I wasn't even sure if it was definitely going to be on. I waited up all night, it came on and you get a real buzz thinking that someone else just pressed play on your tune, and that anyone in the country could hear it.

I would like to thank Thomas for his time and I wish him the best for the future.
