I've mentioned Thomas McConnell quite a lot on here last year, but if you've listened to his music you'll see why, and now he's back with a cover version of a Paul McCartney classic. This is available to download for free via his website right now.

Smile Away - Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney

Yeah you can probably guess the last week has been a bit of a Sir Macca fest, but what's not to love? This track comes from the iconic RAM album. Monkberry Moon Delight is also one of my favourite tracks on this record, but I love everything about this album; it's genius. If you haven't heard it, then what are you waiting for?

Huey Lewis & The News - The Power Of Love

This song is from my favourite movie ever, that's Back to the Future in case you were unaware. Whenever I listen to this it empowers me in so many ways. It really is the ultimate feel good track.

For fans of: Duran Duran, Blondie, The Police, Pet Shop Boys and Simple Minds.

 

 

David Bowie - Oh! You Pretty Things

I find this to be the perfect song to relax to after a hard day. Bowie's vocals are soothing in general and nothing relaxes me more than this particular track. Give it a listen.

For fans of: Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who and The Clash.

 

 

The Jam - Going Underground

Who doesn't love The Jam? They are just one of the greatest bands ever and this song does it for me. It's another feel good tune which will get you dancing. Give it a listen if you haven't already.

The Jam were an English punk rock/mod revival band who formed in Surrey in 1972. The lineup consisted of Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton, Rick Buckler and Steve Brookes (who left before the recording of their debut album). In their early years the band covered American rock and roll artists, until Weller discovered the life-changing influence of The Who. This was where their sound and style took a new direction. The band found that following the mod lifestyle gave them a base to write from, and The Jam as we know them today, were born.

 

Signed to Polydor Records by Chris Parry in 1977, The Jam's debut single titled "In The City" was released in April of the same year. This song did particularly well and was featured in the Top 40. Their debut album was released shortly afterwards containing loud, rock anthems. A second album followed later that year, one which was picked up by John Peel and played in it's entirety on his show.

 

Throughout their duration as a band, The Jam released six studio albums and one live album. They also scored eighteen consecutive Top 40 singles in the UK. Their most notable hits include: "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground", "That's Entertainment" and "Town Called Malice".

 

After the group split in 1982, Paul Weller formed The Style Council with Mick Talbot from The Merton Parkas. They went on to split in 1989. After this Weller kick started his solo career and went on to achieve much success, which is ongoing to this day.

As of this afternoon, Christmas has officially begun for me. Over the past week I've heard nothing but Christmas songs everywhere. I like the majority of festive tunes, however older music will always be my favourite.

 

The Kinks - All Day And All Of The Night

The Kinks are one of my favourite bands from the sixties, and this is what it's all about. This song is included in the band's better known material. Also I watched The Boat That Rocked last weekend, and it was featured on the soundtrack.

For fans of: The Animals, The Who, David Bowie, The Turtles and Bo Diddley.

The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

I'm in love with this song so much it's not healthy, I swear. You have probably heard it before but give it another listen, because you can and you should.

For fans of: Bob Dylan, The Who, Elvis Presley, Oasis and The Beach Boys.

 

Tom Odell - Another Love

I have been hearing this on the radio a lot, and this guy is tipped for big things next year. I downloaded the EP 'Songs From Another Love' and was not disappointed.

For fans of: Ben Howard, Jake Bugg, Lucy Rose, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and Laura Marling.

 

 

Django Django - Life's A Beach

I only started listening to this band a few months ago, and Life's A Beach is one of my favourite songs from their debut album. This is a band you should check out if you haven't already.

For fans of: Spector, The 2 Bears, Tame Impala, Field Music and Cloud Control.

 

 



 

The Jam - Town Called Malice

I've been listening to this old favourite all week. It's catchy, cool and classic. What's not to love?
