Review: Trudy and the Romance - Sticky Mike's Frog Bar 04/11/16

Midnight shows are often a risk bands take with crowds often consisting of bleary-eyed gig-goers or fans who have drunk themselves to excess waiting for the band to grace the stage. This wasn't the case at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar in Brighton when Liverpudlian trio Trudy and the Romance appeared at 12.30am.

Liverpool's latest export are fast gaining a reputation for their brand of DIY alt-rock that channels hints of Mac DeMarco and The Magic Gang at times. Previously called just 'Trudy' the band were forced to change their name for legal reasons but have been on the rise ever since. Their recent support slot on The Big Moon's UK tour has helped improve their standing too and there's seemingly no stopping the three-piece.

They may not have many songs in their discography to date but that didn't stop them from reeling through killer tunes like a 'Best of...' tracklisting. 'Behave' received the most phenomenal of responses and those in attendance never stopped throughout.

'All My Love' witnessed mass jiving take place as if the dancing ban had just been lifted in the film 'Footloose'. Continuing to keep the buzz alive on 'My Baby's Gone Away', they reek of a band who have set themselves up for the big time and undoubtedly have the tracks to match. A real sense of euphoria fills the venue for the duration of their set and there's not hint of tiredness in the trio.

Trudy and the Romance are exactly the type of band who thrive in small, dark venues and Sticky Mike's was the perfect place to showcase tunes that already feel like old pals. Tonight's late show offered an exciting glimpse into the future of a band who just keep improving.

Preview: Two Three Four Festival

The Green Door Store's annual weekender is back for another year. Two Three Four Festival is due to take place at the intimate Brighton venue under the station arches over the August bank holiday weekend (Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August) and features one hell of a line-up.

The free entry event features performances across the weekend from a variety of artists, local and those from afar, but it's hard to pin down who we're most excited for with such a diverse line-up of epic proportions. Brighton's Abattoir Blues have been on our radar for quite a while and their live performances never fail to get crowds groovin'. The rising rock herd create winning slabs of post-punk madness and you'll certainly be in for a treat if you head down to Green Door Store to catch them showcasing the strength of their massively tasty tunes.

Rock four-piece, The Amazons are on the verge of breaking into the mainstream and have a number of compellingly addictive and catchy tracks in their repertoire. Expect high energy, playfulness and hard hooks when they take to the stage at The Green Door Store.

Kent outfit, Get Inuit should definitely be on your festival itinerary. Their self-proclaimed dirty, surf inspired pop rock music bops along at a steady pace and slowly builds into gentle indie anthems. If you're not familiar with them, now's the time to become acquainted as Get Inuit are a band destined for big things.

Game changing Essex based band, Dingus Khan are on a run of fortune at the moment, with slots at major festivals such as Latitude and Reading & Leeds, the band are bringing their catchy and raucous sound to the seaside at Two Three Four. The band, who refused to be pigeon-holed, possess unyielding energy and  a refreshing change of pace; we can't wait to see what they bring to their set at the festival.

Local band, MarthaGunn have bloomed into one of the music industry's best kept secrets but it's about time that changed and people got to know them. The fivesome are meant to tread stages far bigger than the ones they're currently playing on. The female-fronted band make the kind of tracks that whips the frown straight from your face and and 'Heaven' is a definite fan favourite. Make sure not to miss their set.

Photo: Dan A Harris
Our final tip for the festival is the fabulous Hannah Lou Clark. The infectious songstress has truly flourished on her own in recent months and this success is set to continue. Her tracks are feel-good to the bone and we know she'll easily impress at Two Three Four.

As you can see, there are plenty of unmissable and incredibly talented artists on the bill, and with it being free entry there's no excuse not to go. Festivals like Two Three Four are the perfect opportunity to discover your new favourite band before they hit the big time and they benefit the underground music scene and music industry in countless ways. We can't think of anywhere we'd rather be on the bank holiday weekend than at Two Three Four.

Get To Know: Voodoo And The Crypts

Brighton-based Essex natives Voodoo And The Crypts are an indie foursome comprised of Matt Mitchell on guitar and vocals, Jordan Woolnough also on guitar, Rob Davies on bass and Sam Webb responsible for the racket behind the drum kit. They put out slow-building, hook-driven numbers that are going down a storm on the ever-increasing Brighton music scene.

With a hint of psych here and a synth or two scattered there, the four-piece are a complete package of a band and sound remarkably similar to The 1975 at moments. Mitchell's slick vocals are easily comparable to that of Healy's and glistening hooks and tropical melodies take centre stage on 'Breathe'.

Voodoo And The Crypts already sound like a well seasoned outfit and they've been gigging relentlessly throughout the South Coast city recently. Songs like 'Hawaii' and 'Breathe' set an early precedent for what's to come from the lads in the future and an impressive cover of Drake's 'Hold On, We're Going Home' has garnered even more attention for a band full of promise and excitement. We can't wait to see where they go from here.

Catch Voodoo And The Crypts at Together The People Festival in Preston Park, Brighton in September.

In Conversation With: Amelia Caesar

We spoke to promising singer-songwriter Amelia Caesar after her latest show at Marwood Coffee Shop & Studios in Brighton. Despite still being unsigned, the Brighton-based performer recently released her debut single 'Our Love' and has plans for further releases later in the year. If you're a fan of Lucy Rose and Ben Howard; you'll definitely enjoy Amelia Caesar.

Let's start off by asking how your gig at Marwood in Brighton was? Did it go how you expected?

I really loved playing at Marwood, a lot of people went and the room was packed out for my set, which wasn't what I expected at all. The environment was perfect for an acoustic line up and I've been wanting to play the venue since I moved to Brighton last summer and it definitely didn't disappoint.

Have you got anymore dates coming up soon?

I'm playing at Lion Coffee + Records in London on the 14th August and at The Brunswick in Brighton on the 1st September. I'm also playing at Havana Republic in Shrewsbury on the 2nd September.

How did you get into playing music?

I've been playing the guitar for 14 years now, I started when I was at primary school. I grew up learning how to play the violin, keyboard and drums when I was growing up alongside the guitar but the guitar was the only instrument I stuck to. I didn't realise it wasn't just a hobby until I saw Jack Johnson playing at the Brits years ago on TV and I was completely amazed he could have such an impact with just him and his guitar and that's when I realised that's what I wanted to try and do. I started secondary school and that's when my new guitar teacher, John Arran, challenged me to write my first song - and here we are!

What's the writing process like behind your tracks? Does it normally take you long?

My writing process is always changing. I've started writing with a loop pedal which is really fun to do, I can build up so many layers and try so many different ideas so easily. I tend to record every idea I have however long or short they are just so I don't forget them and I can then merge a few ideas into one. I study a songwriting degree so I'm taught many different ways on how I can inspire myself to write but I haven't quite figured out what works best yet for me. I love experimenting so I don't like to stick to one process and I'm always seeking inspiration.

What other artists are you into at the moment? Is there anyone you're taking inspiration from?

I've always taken inspiration from the likes of Lucy Rose and Ben Howard but I've really been into Everything Everything recently. They're not anything like the music I write but I'm fascinated with how they write and arrange their songs. I'm also listening to RY X a lot, I saw him play at St George's Church in Brighton during The Great Escape this year and he was incredible live, his transition between electric and acoustic guitar is something I take a lot of inspiration from, which is something I've been working on recently.

For people who haven't heard your music, how would you describe your sound?

I'd say I'm a mixture between Lucy Rose, Billie Marten and Ben Howard with a hint of Bon Iver.

Are you working on any new releases that people should watch out for?

I am yeah! I'm really excited, I'm currently writing and preparing to record for a release hopefully in time for the end of the year. I was going to release an EP a few months ago but then I decided to delay it as my sound was developing so much that I wanted to wait and see what I came up with and I'm really glad I did. I'm really proud of the songs I've been writing recently and I can't wait to finally share them with everyone.

Do you ever experiment with new sounds or do you know what you like in a track and stick to it?

I used to just stay strictly acoustic but I have always experimented with new fingerpicking techniques. I'm now experimenting as I've started playing electric guitar a lot more, I've also been buying pedals to try out some new sounds which is dangerous territory as a poor student! I'm enjoying writing with my electric and playing around with different reverbs and delays with my loop pedal but I haven't done this live yet so I'm excited for what's to come.

It's pretty great that you're getting your name out there and playing so many gigs. Has anyone in particular guided you through the process or given you any advice that stands out in particular?

I feel really lucky because since moving down to Brighton I've been surrounded by so many people actively working in the music industry who are always offering me advice and guidance. There's a really nice network at the minute between some Brighton bands and myself and it's really nice to be friends with such like-minded people. I study a songwriting degree and I learn lots of different things, especially in my business module which I find really interesting. I learn about how to manage my social media etc and Suzi Ireland, who works at my uni, has given me lots of guidance at the start of the year and I really didn't have a clue what I was doing but now I feel like I've progressed quite a lot and I'm always trying to network.

So would you say that doing these live shows has helped you to progress as a musician?

Definitely! I've been playing live for the past six years and it's my favourite thing ever. It's such a nice feeling when you play a new song live and it goes down well, gigs in Brighton especially are really intimate. Playing live has improved my confidence a ridiculous amount so it has definitely helped.

Finally, what would be your dream festival to play and who else would be on the line-up?

My dream festival would be to play at Barn on the Farm as the line up every year contains the majority of my favourite songwriters. I'd love to include the likes of Lucy Rose, Ben Howard and Bon Iver on the line up and also bands like Bombay Bicycle Club, Black Honey, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats (please listen to them if you're reading this and haven't already) and Mumford and Sons.

Get To Know: Lion Bark

We first raved about Brighton band Lion Bark in 2013 and we can't get enough of their sound. Things went a bit quiet for foursome and there was a distinct lack of their self described 'Beach Beats' but they've returned to their former glory and they are absolutely smashing it at the moment.

There's so many incredible sounds coming from Brighton but Lion Bark are something else. Sweet, wistful melodies are integral to their sound and there's definitely no gimmicks. Their brand of warm, dreamy indie is best showcased on tracks such as 'You and Me' complete with slick and soothing vocals. If you fancy a blissful sway, then you've come to the right place.

Older tracks such as 'Longhorns' and 'Two Prongs' possess an indie charm at the core, thus proving that Lion Bark are certainly on to something, it's just a matter of honing their sound even further than they already have done.

To their credit though, the band have been touring relentlessly with gigs at Shoreditch's The Old Blue Last and Brighton's The Green Door Store to name a few. If you missed out they've got plenty of upcoming dates in the diary, so make sure to head down to a show and catch them.

Lion Bark could have an exciting future ahead of them if their previous releases are anything to go by. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for a new EP soon.

LIVE REVIEW // The Magic Gang and Sheikh @ The Hope and Ruin 02.12.15

Brighton babes, The Magic Gang kicked their tour off in style at The Hope and Ruin - a bar/live music venue inspired by Eastern European watering holes and decorated entirely out of found objects and gig posters.

The Strokes have played the venue in the past and it's a place full of character with a lively atmosphere to match; an apt fit for the headliners and their support band, Sheikh, who embody everything you want them to be and more.

As the room starts to fill up, Sheikh take to the stage and dive straight into 'Fortune'. The five-piece who hail from Bahrain but now reside in London have a sound that can be described as guitar driven psych rock with a little bit of pop thrown in for a twist.

Whilst they're very much themselves and have an epic stage presence, at times Sheikh have a tendency to sound like The Maccabees mashed with Catfish & The Bottlemen and Bombay Bicycle Club and they own it. Stand-out tracks include 'I Could Be Yours' and their debut track 'Fonda' which impresses with sun-kissed guitars and is laced with a sleek guitar riff.

A short while later, The Magic Gang grace the venue and smash their way through a setlist of devilishly great tracks including 'Jasmine' from their forthcoming EP. The band have recently been announced as part of DIY magazine's 'Class of 2016' and with good reason, their live set contains a thrilling intensity throughout.

'No Fun' is a dreamy affair from start to finish that gets the crowd dancing to their searing guitars and polished grooves. Singer and guitarist, Jack Kaye snaps the string on his guitar before telling the crowd "It's okay - I don't use that string anyway."

Both, The Magic Gang and Sheikh are bands providing reasons to get excited about music again. Their tracks will worm their way into your memory easily and fingers crossed, we'll hear some more material from them soon. The bands are touring together for the rest of December; go show them some love and support at a gig near you.

Resident // Brighton

INDEPENDENT record shop, Resident, situated in Brighton's iconic North Laine area is a hub for indie darlings alike. Offering a sharp contrast to the likes of HMV and digital music retailers, Resident is leading the way and proving to people why vinyl is still very much on the agenda and why we should continue to purchase music in a physical form.
Inside the store you'll find records and albums with stickers on containing detailed descriptions of the music, passionate and knowledgable staff who really know a thing or two when it comes to recommending music and they're always spot on.

The shop has just had a recent revamp, which includes an expansion of the shop floor to make room for even more records. Co-founder Derry Watkins told local newspaper The Argus: "There has been a huge increase, especially with younger people, which means there is a much wider range available now... Young people who used to be interested in CDs are now looking for vinyl so the record companies have started bringing out newer releases on vinyl with limited edition presses and covers and things to respond to that demand."

As well as selling music, Resident also sell tickets to gigs in the local area and frequently host in-store gigs and signings, which they are well-known for. All of these factors combined have meant that Resident have won the title of the UK's best independent record shop three times.

You can visit Resident at 28 Kensington Gardens, North Laine, Brighton and contact them on 01273 606312.

Demob Happy 'Junk DNA'

BRIGHTON babes Demob Happy are a four-piece taking a stand against banality and apathy, whilst making seriously sweet sounds. Formed of lead singer/bassist Matthew Marcantonio, drummer Thomas Armstrong and guitarists Matthew Renforth and Adam Godfrey. In terms of their signature sound, think super-sized brooding epics tinged with Queens Of The Stone Age style riffs and snarls reminiscent of Metallica here and there.

The quintet's track 'Junk DNA' is a frenetic anthem from the minute you press play. The riffs and beats come thick and fast, there's no doubt Demob Happy could give Muse a run for their money at times. The group manage to spark a frenzy and ensure listeners will be listening long after their sub five minute track is over.

Dealing in mind-expanding material, we're excited to see what the future holds for this four-piece. If they keep up the bruising rhythms and searing guitar hooks, then it won't be long before they seamlessly transition into the band that everybody's talking about.

Lion Bark

Brighton four-piece Lion Bark first started life in 2012 and since then, the Bill Hicks influenced band have gone from strength to strength turning heads with their brand of self-described 'Beach Beats'.

Their impressive swirling, sweet and wistful take on 2013's indie-pop trend is performed quite spectacularly. At times their effortless pop charms appear redolent of Vampire Weekend. Latest track 'Longhorns' is taken from the forthcoming debut EP from Lion Bark which is set for release in early 2014.
Previous release 'Two Prongs' picked up support and acclaim from BBC Introducing, Clash Magazine and NME Magazine also mentioned them as a band to watch recently.
Lion Bark deal in hazy, summer jams but their slice of new-wave sound is one that will keep us going until we are greeted with the arrival of next summer.
Brighton has a growing reputation for producing bands who consistently deliver strong songs and Lion Bark are no exception; get them in your life.

Royal Blood

Royal by name and rich by the nature of their bass and drum soundscape - Brighton-based duo Royal Blood are showing newbies to the music scene how it's done, despite still being in the early stages of band life themselves. For those of you new to their sound, Royal Blood can only be described as that which would result if Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, Drenge and The White Stripes were to form a super group. They're that good.

The band caught the eye of Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders earlier in the year, when the Sheffield drummer asked for a Royal Blood T-shirt a day prior to the Monkeys' headline Glastonbury gig. This caused plenty of panic for the group whose merchandise didn't even exist until Helders submitted a request.
Thankfully, singer/bassist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher aren't ones to shy away from  a challenge and twenty four hours later the drummer was seen sporting the first set of threads that was to become their official merchandise. Kerr later remarked to NME magazine "That melted our brains." Here's the deal with Royal Blood - they're brain-melting specialists.

From the opening rumbles of 'Out Of The Black' it's clear we're onto something special. Royal Blood pile straight into a major tune blanketed by sleazy bass spins that will see listeners going berserk for their creeping, yet appealing menace. Relying on relatively little is a hard task to master, but the two-piece make full use of their limitations and send out hooky thrash rock tracks such as B-side 'Come On Over'.

Exuding sheer explosive energy, from a band that are drip-feeding fans with new material, Royal Blood have proven themselves to be ones to watch out for as they head for the big league and burst out of speakers near you soon. Violently thrilling to their core, we're excited to see where their sound takes them if this glimpse of anticipation is anything to go by.

The Orwells

Illinois based flower punk band The Orwells may only be young, (at eighteen years of age) but they sure know a thing or two about making quality music. Signed to Autumn Tone Records, the American five piece have gigged with high profile bands such as Palma Violets, and more recently they were pleasing crowds at Brighton's The Great Escape Festival. Connected by the same musical tissue, The Orwells capture punk's finer moments and forge a musical identity of their own.

Produced by Dave Sitek, the band treat us to three minutes of assertive riffs on Other Voices. With frantic drumming and an accelerating pace, The Orwells exert a sound beyond their years, transporting listeners back to the noughties when The Strokes were in their prime. Mallrats, is another rough and ready number with raw garage vocals scattered throughout the track. Little has been said about the band's influences, but with mega tunes like these it wouldn't be a surprise if The Rolling Stones and The Stooges turned out to be the ones.

Final track, Head continues in the same vein we've been travelling down. With a sense of menace here, and pulsing guitar lines there, The Orwells have crafted a scratchy riffed racket that will linger in listeners minds. The band describe themselves as sounding "real raunchy and shit", whilst raunchy they are, shit they are most definitely not.

The Wytches

Psych revivalists The Wytches continue 2013's take on psychedelia with their snarling instrumentation and paisley vibes. Consisting of Kristian Bell (Vocals/Guitar/Organ) Mark Breed (Guitar) Dan Rumsey (Bass) and Gianni Honey (Drums) the band have described their brand of sound as "surf doom" and stand in line amongst fellow psych rockers Temples as poster boys for the resurgence of psych-flecked audio. Since forming in late 2011, The Wytches have cast a spell on Hate Hate Hate Records who they're signed to, and now reside in Brighton where they are paving the way to becoming one of Britain's greatest alternative acts.

Listening to their track Beehive Queen, one thing is clear - the group sound like they have devoured Arctic Monkeys' back catalogue and reissued it with a psychedelic edge. The appeal of this dark and cynical psych band, is summed up neatly through their killer riffs and sense of menace, each track communicates to the listener. Devilishly acidic undertones linger in abundance and leave a sour after taste, and whilst it's more of a hazy strain of 60s influenced rock - the flower power is still there, tiny yet visible. Tripped out and ready to brew a storm; The Wytches are in a league of their own.
