Get To Know: Exam Season

Self-proclaimed 'awkward' indie-rockers, Exam Season are an endearing outfit garnering all the right kinds of attention at the moment. The actual exam season that countless numbers of students across the nation might be dreaded by many, but the Hampshire four-piece are slightly more pleasant.

The band considered going by the name of 'Office Job' previously during a brief period of unemployment, but their current name glued and they've never looked back since. The tracks they make mix upbeat guitars with a blatant melancholic vibe that lingers and proves to be a success.

'A Pretty Song' from their debut EP 'Mostly Homely' is the best of the bunch and streams into your ears whilst leaving you pining for more. The title-track of their first output sees everything sounding beautifully crisp, detailed and rich. 'Mostly Homely' is an immediately infectious number that you'll struggle to forget for quite some time, which is good because you certainly won't want to.

The band cite some true heroes as inspiration, such as: American Football, Weezer, Los Campesinos and even Angels and Airwaves. It's a varied mix that is truly reflected in, both, their songwriting and warm, colourful guitar blend that is very much indebted to the 90s - 'Megabus' being the finest example of this.

Unemployment after graduating from university was the driving force behind Exam Season but it's a harsh reality they'll never have to face again after making a collection of tracks like these. Exam Season have previously played the likes of The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch and Bournemouth's 60 Million Postcards but keep an eye out for them as things are only going to heat up for them.

Get To Know: Clay

Yorkshire four-piece, Clay formed in 2014 from a desire to escape the mundane routine of everyday life in their hometown Leeds. Now the group are gaining coverage in all the right places and touring extensively to get their name out there even further.

Debut single 'Sun Dance' hits all the right notes with bouncy riffs and memorable songwriting at the foundation. Brothers, Joe and Jack Harvey are responsible for the lyricism with Rob Gration and Danny Armitage making up the rest of the band.

Cuts such as 'Stay Calm' shares a similar direction to the electronic beats of The 1975 and the bewitching 'Oxygen' is a standout track that grooves effortlessly with neat riffs that you'll be recalling for quite some time.

Clay have toured with High Tyde previously and have received airplay on major national stations such as Radio 1 and XFM. Look out for Clay sizzling infectiously with their vibrant indie numbers at a venue near you soon; this is a band set to make a big impact.

Get To Know: Lion Bark

We first raved about Brighton band Lion Bark in 2013 and we can't get enough of their sound. Things went a bit quiet for foursome and there was a distinct lack of their self described 'Beach Beats' but they've returned to their former glory and they are absolutely smashing it at the moment.

There's so many incredible sounds coming from Brighton but Lion Bark are something else. Sweet, wistful melodies are integral to their sound and there's definitely no gimmicks. Their brand of warm, dreamy indie is best showcased on tracks such as 'You and Me' complete with slick and soothing vocals. If you fancy a blissful sway, then you've come to the right place.

Older tracks such as 'Longhorns' and 'Two Prongs' possess an indie charm at the core, thus proving that Lion Bark are certainly on to something, it's just a matter of honing their sound even further than they already have done.

To their credit though, the band have been touring relentlessly with gigs at Shoreditch's The Old Blue Last and Brighton's The Green Door Store to name a few. If you missed out they've got plenty of upcoming dates in the diary, so make sure to head down to a show and catch them.

Lion Bark could have an exciting future ahead of them if their previous releases are anything to go by. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for a new EP soon.

Get To Know: Breathe Panel

Devon via Brighton foursome Breathe Panel are already hotly tipped from some of our favourite artists, shout out to The Big Moon, Abattoir Blues and The Magic Gang, and they've just landed themselves a sweet deal with Brighton's Fat Cat label. Now, the promising outfit are brewing the perfect storm with their stomping debut single 'On My Way'.

The catchy lo-fi track chugs along with fuzzy bass underlining the track and yearning vocals that complete the sub-three minute number nicely. It's a strong indicator of what's to come from the band, who have the potential to become as big as Wolf Alice and co if they continue in the direction they're already following.

'On My Way' is due to be released on 19th August via Fat Cat and is available to stream now. Breathe Panel will support Honeyblood on select dates of their DIY Presents UK tour later in the year.
